What does image compression actually change?

Two things, and the second one matters more than people expect. A lossy encoder discards detail your eye is least likely to miss, mostly fine colour variation. Pixel count then multiplies whatever is left: a 4000 by 3000 photo holds twelve million pixels, and capping its longest side at 2560 removes about 59 per cent of them before compression even begins. That is why the stronger profiles resize as well as re-encode.

What do the three profiles do?

Low re-encodes at quality 0.85 and leaves the dimensions alone, so it is the safe choice for images you still care about pixel for pixel. Recommended caps the longest side at 2560 pixels and encodes at 0.72, which is invisible on ordinary photos. Extreme caps at 1600 pixels and drops to 0.5, useful when a form demands a small file and quality is secondary.

Why does my PNG come back as WebP?

Because re-encoding a PNG as PNG saves almost nothing. PNG is already lossless DEFLATE compression, so a second pass finds nothing new to squeeze out. WebP lossy mode carries the same 8-bit alpha channel and does produce real savings, which is the honest way to make a transparent image smaller. Run WebP to PNG afterwards if you need the extension back.

What if a file cannot be made smaller?

You get the original back, byte for byte. Already-optimised images, very small ones, and browsers without a WebP encoder all end up in this case, and re-encoding them anyway would cost quality for nothing. Compression runs in your browser, so there is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you drop.
