Good to know
WebP is an image format Google released in 2010. It has two modes, a lossy one built on the intra-frame prediction of the VP8 video codec and a fully lossless one, and both can carry an 8-bit alpha channel. Sites adopted it because Google measured lossy WebP at roughly 25 to 34 per cent smaller than JPEG at comparable quality, which is bandwidth saved on every page view.
JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels are composited onto white. An animated WebP is a sequence of frames rather than a video stream, and a JPG can hold only one image, so the conversion keeps the first frame. Use WebP to PNG when transparency has to survive.
A little, yes. The WebP is decoded to raw pixels and re-encoded as JPEG at quality 0.92, which is a second lossy pass over an image that was already compressed once. At that setting the difference is hard to see at 100 per cent zoom, but keep the WebP original if the file may be edited again later.
Yes, with no sign-up, no watermark and no file-size limit. Decoding and encoding both happen on a canvas inside your browser, so the images never leave your device.
