01How do I get exact dimensions like 100x100 without distortion?
Unlock the aspect ratio and type both values. Asking for a square from a rectangular photo can only be answered two ways, by squashing the picture or by cutting part of it away, and this tool always cuts: it selects the largest region matching your target ratio and scales that down. So the numbers are exact and the proportions inside the frame are never stretched. With the lock on, the height follows the width for you.
02Why does an enlarged image look soft?
Because upscaling cannot invent detail that was never captured. Going from 500 to 1000 pixels wide means three quarters of the output pixels have no source, so they are interpolated by averaging their neighbours, and averaging is exactly what blurs an edge. Downscaling is the safe direction: it throws information away, which is why a reduced photo still looks sharp.
03Which format and quality does the output use?
The input format is kept wherever the browser can encode it. JPG stays JPG at quality 0.92 with any transparency flattened onto white, WebP stays WebP at 0.92, and PNG stays lossless PNG. GIF and BMP become PNG, because canvas has no encoder for either. In a batch only the first image uses the crop you drew, and the rest get a centred crop with the same target ratio.
