01What is an ORF file?
ORF, Olympus Raw Format, is what Olympus and now OM System cameras write when you shoot raw. It holds the unprocessed readings of every sensor photosite behind a colour filter mosaic, plus the shot settings and a JPEG preview. A raw file is not yet a picture: it has to be developed by reconstructing full colour at each pixel, which is why an ORF will not open in most applications and why the format keeps the development choices editable.
02Why do some tools say an ORF file is corrupted when it is not?
Because ORF is a TIFF file with a signature of its own. An ordinary TIFF starts with a byte-order mark followed by the number 42; Olympus writes IIRO, MMOR or IIRS there instead, depending on the camera. Software that checks for the 42 and stops rejects a perfectly valid file. This tool does not gate on that number: it walks the directory structure and validates what it finds, so a camera whose signature nobody has catalogued still opens.
03Is the extracted JPG as good as developing the raw?
It is exactly as good as the JPEG the camera would have saved in JPEG mode, because that is what it is, including the colour rendering Olympus is liked for. What you give up is latitude: recovering blown highlights or changing white balance needs the sensor data and a developer such as OM Workspace, Lightroom or darktable.
04Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The ORF container is parsed by JavaScript in your browser tab and the extracted JPG is written straight to your disk. Nothing about your photos is transmitted or stored anywhere.
