DNG, Digital Negative, is a raw format Adobe published openly in 2004 and still maintains. Unlike NEF, CR2 or ARW, which each belong to one manufacturer, DNG is documented and free to implement, which is why cameras from Leica, Pentax and Ricoh write it natively, most drones use it, and Adobe ships a converter that turns any other raw file into one. Underneath it is a TIFF container holding the unprocessed sensor readings, the shot settings, and a JPEG preview of the finished picture.
Because ProRAW writes DNG, and DNG is a raw container rather than a picture: Windows Explorer, Finder and Google Drive mostly show a blank icon or nothing at all, even though a perfectly good JPEG is sitting inside the file. That is exactly what this tool pulls out. Worth knowing if you are chasing an odd file size: newer iPhones can compress ProRAW using JPEG XL, but that happens inside the container, so the extension stays .DNG either way.
It is exactly as good as the JPEG the device itself produced, because that is literally what it is. What you give up is not sharpness or resolution but latitude: recovering blown highlights, lifting deep shadows or changing white balance needs the sensor data and a raw developer such as Lightroom, darktable or RawTherapee. For sharing, printing and everyday use, the embedded JPEG is the picture as the camera intended it.
No. The DNG container is parsed by JavaScript in your browser tab and the extracted JPG is written straight to your disk. Raw files are usually somebody's master copies, which is exactly the kind of file that should not sit on a converter's server waiting for a retention policy to delete it.
Structurally yes, and that is the point of DNG: one documented container instead of a proprietary format per brand. What differs is the content. Phones often merge several exposures computationally before writing the file, so the negative is less raw than a single sensor readout from a camera.
