01What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is an image format built on the AV1 video codec, standardised in 2019 and now used widely on the web. At the same visual quality it is typically 30 to 50 percent smaller than JPEG, and unlike JPEG it supports transparency, animation, HDR and 12-bit colour. The trade-off is age: plenty of desktop software, print workflows and upload forms still do not recognise the format, which is why converting to JPG is often the fastest way to actually use the image.
02Will the image lose quality?
Slightly, because JPG is a lossy format and the file is re-encoded. The conversion uses a high quality setting, so the difference is not visible at normal viewing sizes, but the JPG will usually be larger than the AVIF it came from, and that size gap is exactly what AVIF was designed to close.
03Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The decoding and re-encoding happen in your browser tab and the result is written straight to your disk, so the image never leaves your device.
