01What is an ARW file?
ARW, Sony Alpha Raw, is the raw format Sony Alpha cameras write. It is a TIFF container holding the unprocessed readings of every sensor photosite, at 12 or 14 bits, behind a Bayer colour filter, plus the shot settings and a JPEG preview. A raw file is not yet a picture: software has to develop it by reconstructing full colour at each pixel and applying white balance and a tone curve, which is why an ARW does not open in most applications.
02Does Sony's compressed raw setting change what I get here?
Not for this tool. Sony bodies offer uncompressed, lossless compressed and lossy compressed raw, and the choice affects the sensor data and the file size, not the preview: the embedded JPEG is written the same way regardless. It matters a great deal if you develop the raw yourself, because lossy compressed raw discards information you can never recover, but the picture this tool hands you is identical either way.
03Is the extracted JPG as good as developing the raw?
It is exactly as good as the JPEG the camera would have saved in JPEG mode, because that is what it is. What you give up is latitude: recovering blown highlights, lifting shadows or changing white balance needs the sensor data and a developer such as Imaging Edge, Lightroom or darktable. For sharing and printing, the embedded JPEG is the picture as the camera intended it.
04Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The ARW container is parsed by JavaScript in your browser tab and the extracted JPG is written straight to your disk. Raw files tend to be master copies of somebody's work, which is exactly what should not sit on a converter's server.
