01What is FLAC, and how is it different from MP3?
FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. It compresses audio the way ZIP compresses a document: the file gets roughly 40 to 50 percent smaller and decoding restores the original samples exactly, bit for bit. MP3 works the other way round, discarding sound that the ear is unlikely to notice, which is why it reaches much smaller files but can never be turned back into the original. The practical consequence is that FLAC is the right format to archive in and MP3 is the right format to carry around.
02Will I hear the difference after converting?
On most equipment, no. At 192 kbps the artefacts are below the threshold most listeners can pick out in a blind comparison, especially on phone speakers, earbuds or in a car. On studio monitors with dense music, a trained ear sometimes can. Since the conversion is one-way, keep the FLAC files if they are your only copy.
03Is there a limit on file size or length?
No. The audio is decoded and encoded by your own browser, so the only real limit is your device memory. Very long recordings simply take longer, and files are processed one after another so a large batch does not exhaust memory.
